Spring Festival is China's most important traditional holiday — a 7-day national holiday marking the lunar new year. Families reunite for elaborate meals, children receive red envelopes (hongbao), and fireworks light up the sky. For travelers, it's simultaneously the most culturally immersive and logistically challenging time to visit China. Transportation is severely strained (chunyun — the Spring Festival travel rush — is the world's largest annual human migration), many small businesses close for the entire week, and tourist attractions operate at extreme capacity. If you plan to travel during Spring Festival, book everything months in advance and expect premium pricing.
