The Laba Festival on the 8th day of the 12th lunar month is the traditional start of the Spring Festival countdown. The core experience is eating laba porridge — a sweet congee with grains, beans, nuts, and dried fruit. Temples across China distribute free laba porridge, a tradition dating back centuries. Beijing's Yonghe Temple (Lama Temple) is the most famous location. Not a public holiday and causes no travel disruption. A quiet, authentic cultural experience for winter travelers.
