National Day Golden Week (October 1–7) is China's single largest domestic tourism peak. Every major attraction is packed to capacity, high-speed train tickets sell out within seconds of release, and hotels charge 2–3 times normal rates. For first-time visitors, this is absolutely the worst time to travel in China. Roads, scenic spots, and even smaller towns are overwhelmed. If you must travel during this period, stick to lesser-known destinations and book everything far in advance. Most experienced travelers actively avoid China during Golden Week.
